Forms Processing & Data Capture Software Guide

There are 2 categories of forms processing application available.  The first is the traditional, fixed-format, hand-filled forms and surveys.  Some examples of this type are credit  applications, tax forms and bank deposit slips where written answers must be printed in separate boxes for each character.  These are referred to as Fixed forms or surveys. In the past few years, technology has developed to locate common data elements like a date or social security number anywhere they appear on the page.  This lets you automate virtually any data entry task originating on paper.  Forms with similar data elements on different page layouts are called Semi-Structured forms. The most common example of a semi-structured form is invoices, where each document has a vendor name, invoice number, amount, etc., but these appear in different locations on each page since every vendor has a different layout for their invoices.

The Distributed versions allow multiple processing and verification stations for high volume applications. IRISCapture for Forms is a good solution for less demanding forms that do not require scripted validation rules.  It is easier to setup and use than FormReader/FlexiCapture, but is not as accurate or feature-rich. FormCliq for Surveys is an easy and inexpensive application for reading simple checkbox surveys. IRISCapture for Invoices is a more robust solution than FormCliq but is also limited to the specific task of Invoice OCR.  IRISCapture is able to recognize key invoice data similar to FormCliq, but also has more advanced settings to help locate distinct data elements. SimpleIndex implements a simplified version of FlexiCapture's dynamic OCR for a fraction of the cost.  SimpleIndex is designed to use dynamic OCR to automate batch scanning and is not recommended for applications with more than 10 data fields.
