ScanSnap on a Mac: software, drivers and which models still work
ScanSnap scanners work on a Mac, but which software you need depends on the model. Ricoh's PFU, which now makes ScanSnap, provides the Mac software free from its ScanSnap support site, and newer macOS versions have dropped some older models. Find your scanner below.
ScanSnap Home and ScanSnap Manager
- ScanSnap Home is the current software for Mac and Windows. It scans, files and names documents, receipts and business cards, and makes searchable PDFs. Every current model uses it.
- ScanSnap Manager is the older software. PFU ended support for it in November 2024, and it isn't available for macOS releases after Sonoma 14.
Mac support by model
- iX1300, iX2400, iX2500 and SV600 are current models and work with the latest ScanSnap Home for Mac.
- iX1600, iX1500, iX1400, iX500, S1300i and S1100i are discontinued but still run ScanSnap Home, with limits on the newest macOS releases. PFU lists the iX500 as unsupported from macOS Sequoia 15, and the iX1500 and S1100i as unsupported from macOS 27.
- S1500, S1500M, S1300 and S1100 never got ScanSnap Home. A 64-bit ScanSnap Manager V7, released for macOS Catalina, still drives them, but they are out of support and can no longer be repaired.
- S300M, S510M and older Mac models weren't included in that 64-bit release, so they have no software for macOS Catalina or later.
Check your scanner and macOS version against PFU's macOS support list for discontinued models and its ScanSnap Manager operating system list.
If your ScanSnap won't run on your Mac
If your scanner no longer has software for your version of macOS, a current ScanSnap is the simplest fix. The iX1300 is the compact choice. The iX2500 adds a 100-sheet feeder, a touchscreen and Wi-Fi, so it can scan without a computer. See choosing a ScanSnap for the full range, or Mac-compatible scanners from other makers.
If your ScanSnap still runs but feeds badly, worn rollers are the usual cause. See Fujitsu and ScanSnap parts.
Editing scans on a Mac
ScanSnap Home makes searchable PDFs. For accurate conversion of scans into Word and Excel files you can edit, use ABBYY FineReader PDF for Mac, which converts scans to Word and Excel. Power PDF for Mac edits PDF files.
