Bank statement converter: PDF statements to Excel
A bank statement converter turns PDF or scanned bank statements into spreadsheet rows: date, description, amount and running balance for every transaction, ready for Excel, CSV or your accounting software. Bookkeepers, accountants, lenders and auditors use it to avoid retyping months of transactions.
What makes statements hard
- Every bank's layout is different, and layouts change.
- Transactions span pages, with headers and running totals in between.
- Descriptions wrap onto several lines, and debits and credits may sit in one column or two.
- Scanned and photographed statements need OCR before anything can be read.
Converting statements with SimpleIndex
SimpleIndex reads text directly from digital PDF statements, and uses OCR for scanned ones. For tables, it works with cloud engines that have models built for financial documents: Azure Document Intelligence and Google Document AI both offer bank statement models, and Amazon Textract reads tables from any layout. SimpleIndex exports the transactions to CSV or a database, names and files each statement by account and period, and processes whole folders at once. Its optional AI can also run on your own servers when statements can't leave your network.
Check the totals
Whatever tool you use, reconcile the extracted transactions against the statement's opening and closing balances. A mismatch points straight to a missed or misread line.
