Scanner not showing up? Check the USB or network connection, install the right TWAIN, ISIS or WIA driver, match 32-bit and 64-bit software, and know when to replace it.

Scanner not detected: connection and driver problems

When the computer or the scanning software can't find the scanner, the cause is nearly always the connection or the driver, not the scanner itself. Work through these checks in order.

Check the connection

  • Power and ready light: the scanner should be on and out of sleep, with the feeder cover closed.
  • Plug the USB cable straight into the computer, not into a hub, dock, monitor or keyboard port, and try a different port.
  • Try another cable. A damaged or over-long USB cable causes connections that come and go. See scanner cables and power adapters.
  • Network scanners: make sure the scanner and computer are on the same network, and that the scanner's IP address hasn't changed since it was set up.

Check the driver

  • Install the manufacturer's current driver for your operating system from the maker's support site. Many makers say to install the driver before connecting the scanner.
  • Match the driver to the software. Business scanning programs use a TWAIN or ISIS driver; Windows Scan and Windows Fax and Scan use WIA. The scanner can work in one program and not appear in another because only one driver type is installed. See scanners as computer peripherals.
  • 32-bit or 64-bit: a 64-bit scanning program needs a 64-bit TWAIN driver. Older scanners may only have a 32-bit one.
  • Restart after installing, and check that the scanner appears in Windows Device Manager.

Mac

Mac support depends on the model; many business scanners have no current macOS driver. See document scanners for Mac and ScanSnap on a Mac.

When it's time to replace

Scanners with SCSI connections, or models whose maker never released a driver for Windows 10 or 11, can't be fixed with settings. If yours is one of them, compare current models, or send us your model and what you scan and we'll suggest a replacement, new or refurbished.
