Scanner cleaning kits and supplies

Regular cleaning is the cheapest maintenance a document scanner gets. Paper dust and toner build up on the rollers, which then slip and cause misfeeds and double feeds, and on the glass, which puts streaks and lines on every image. Most manufacturers recommend cleaning a production scanner daily and a desktop scanner every few thousand pages.

What a cleaning kit contains

• Roller cleaner, such as Fujitsu's F1 cleaner, which removes paper residue and restores the grip of rubber rollers. Use the cleaner your scanner's maker recommends; alcohol and household cleaners can dry rubber out.
• Lint-free wipes and swabs for the glass, sensors and the paper path.
• Cleaning sheets, which you feed through the scanner like paper. They are the quickest way to clean a high-volume scanner between full cleanings.
• Glass cleaner for flatbed glass.

Kits by brand

• Fujitsu and Ricoh: the ScanAid cleaning kit, and ScanAid kits that also include replacement rollers. See which Fujitsu kit fits your scanner.
• Kodak: transport cleaning sheets, roller cleaning pads and kits for the i-series. See Kodak scanner maintenance.
• Canon, Bell & Howell and others: cleaning cards and kits for selected models.

When cleaning no longer stops misfeeds, the rollers are worn and need replacing; see scanner roller kits.
