Choosing an auto-feed (ADF) document scanner
An auto-feed scanner has an automatic document feeder (ADF): you drop in a stack and it scans every page, usually both sides at once, without anyone turning pages. Almost every document scanner works this way. The differences that matter are how much the feeder holds, how well it copes with real paper, and how many pages a day it is built for.
What to compare
- Feeder capacity. Compact models hold 20 to 50 sheets, office models 50 to 100, and production scanners 300 or more. Match it to a typical batch.
- Speed. Pages per minute (ppm) counts sheets and images per minute (ipm) counts sides; a duplex scanner's ipm is double its ppm.
- Misfeeds. Ultrasonic double-feed detection stops the scan when two pages go through together, so a missing page is caught at the scanner and not found months later.
- Paper range. Check the minimum and maximum paper weight and size. Receipts, business cards, plastic cards and long documents all need a feeder rated for them.
- Upkeep. Feed rollers and separation pads are consumables. Check the cost of replacement rollers and pads for the models you shortlist.
