Form recognition software
Form recognition software, also called form scanning software, reads the data from filled-in paper forms, such as applications, order forms, registrations and inspection sheets, so nobody has to key it in. It identifies which form each page is, then reads the typed text, hand printing and checkboxes in each field and sends the data to a database or business system.
What it reads, and how
- Typed or system-printed text is read by zone OCR from the same place on every copy of the form.
- Hand printing is read by ICR, which works best when the form gives each character its own box.
- Checkboxes and bubbles are read by OMR (optical mark recognition).
- Barcodes identify the form, and often the person or case it belongs to, with no recognition errors.
Choosing software

- ABBYY FlexiCapture is the choice for large volumes, many form types or a lot of handwriting. It adds form templates, validation rules and a verification station where people confirm only the uncertain characters.
- Remark Office OMR is built for surveys, tests and other forms that are mostly checkboxes and bubbles.
