Microsoft Office Document Imaging and what replaced it
Microsoft Office Document Imaging (MODI) came with Microsoft Office up to Office 2007. It scanned documents, viewed TIFF and MDI image files, and ran OCR to turn scanned text into something you could copy into Word. Microsoft removed it in Office 2010 and never brought it back, so if you've upgraded Office or Windows, MODI is gone.
What Microsoft offers instead
OneNote can copy text from a picture you paste or scan into it, and Windows Fax and Scan scans pages to image files. Neither converts a whole scanned document into a formatted Word file or a searchable PDF, which is what most MODI users relied on.
Replacements for MODI
- Free: SimpleOCR, our free OCR software, converts scanned pages to editable text, and SimpleView is a free document viewer with basic OCR.
- Accurate conversion: ABBYY FineReader PDF and OmniPage convert scans into Word, Excel and searchable PDF while keeping the layout.
